Keynote: Celebrating failure: a way to preserve professional integrity and save the NHS?.
The current focus in medical education is succeeding at all costs and although politicians pay lip service to having a no blame culture front line health workers know this is not the reality. Failure does happen and in fact we learn much more from our failures and mistakes than anything else.
How pernicious is the current climate in education and work for our medical students and trainees?
By concentrating only on success and pillorying those who fail what are we doing to tomorrows healthcare professionals?
In this talk I will examine the current climate in both medical school and the UK NHS to help us understand what are the unintended consequences of systems that don’t accept and learn from failure. Finally discuss what we might do to improve things for the future.
